Having identified the need for redundancy, some businesses will prefer not to run the full consultation, but instead invite employees to apply for voluntary redundancy.
An employer’s voluntary redundancy policy will take account of the skill and experience of the staff that the business needs to retain. To avoid an exodus of key talent it will reserve the organisation’s right to decide whether particular employees should be allowed to take voluntary redundancy. The advantage to the employer is that compulsory redundancy is avoided and the process is less disruptive.
The incentive for employees applying for voluntary redundancy is the receipt of an enhanced termination package (it will usually exceed the minimum statutory redundancy payment, if that is due at law). Against this, individuals will weigh the economic climate and their chances of finding alternative work.
